Electric water heaters (geysers) are a staple of the Indian household. They are among the highest-risk consumer electrical products — combining high voltage, high water temperature, and pressurized water systems. QCO 2026 mandates BIS ISI mark certification for water heaters.

The thermostat must cut off heating before water temperature reaches scalding threshold. The maximum water temperature limit in IS 302 Part 2 Sec 21 (storage water heaters) is defined. Overheat protection must function even if the primary thermostat fails (backup thermostat required).
Storage geysers operate under water pressure. The temperature and pressure relief (T&P relief valve) must function correctly to prevent tank rupture under overtemperature conditions. This valve is tested under IS 302 Part 2 Sec 21.
The live electrical components (heating element, thermostat) must be isolated from the tank body that contains conductive water. Insulation resistance and dielectric strength are tested after the geyser is subjected to simulated condensation and moisture conditions.
Most storage geysers use sacrificial anodes to prevent tank corrosion. While this is a durability feature rather than a safety test, it relates to the geyser's long-term structural integrity under IS 302 requirements for appliances subjected to continuous water contact.
While the geyser itself must comply with IS 302 safety requirements, it is strongly recommended (and increasingly mandated by electrical codes) that geysers in Indian homes are installed on an ELCB (Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker) protected circuit. BIS certification of the geyser is one requirement; proper installation per electrical safety norms is another.
