Critical Safety Tests

Anti-Tilt Cut-Off (Critical)

Room heaters can cause fires if they fall over while operating. IS 302 Part 2 Sec 30 (room heaters) requires an automatic cut-off device that switches off the heater within seconds when it is tilted or knocked over. This is a non-negotiable safety feature. Any room heater without anti-tilt protection will fail BIS testing.

Guards and Radiation Protection

Heating elements in radiant heaters reach incandescent temperatures. Guards must prevent accidental contact with the glowing element. Gap dimensions in the guard are specified in the standard.

Surface Temperature of Housing

The outer housing of room heaters must not exceed specified temperature limits at accessible surfaces. This is particularly challenging for compact designs where the housing is close to the heating element.

Electric Blankets — Specialized Requirements

Electric blankets have specific requirements under IS 302 Part 2 Sec 17 (blankets, pads, and similar flexible heating appliances). The heating element inside the blanket must maintain even temperature distribution and must cut off safely if the blanket is folded or bunched (which creates localized overheating).

Oil-Filled Radiators

Oil-filled radiators use electrical elements to heat dielectric oil. The thermal cut-off must prevent oil overheating. The oil seal integrity prevents leakage of hot oil — an important mechanical safety requirement tested under IS 302 Part 2 Sec 30.
