Water dispensers — hot and cold, countertop and floor-standing — used in offices, homes, and commercial spaces are covered under QCO 2026 and require BIS ISI mark certification.

Applicable IS 302 Part 2 Section

Water dispensers fall under IS 302 Part 2 Section 15 (IEC 60335-2-15) which covers appliances for heating liquids, or Section 24 which covers refrigerating appliances. Most water dispensers involve both heating and cooling — confirm the correct Part 2 section(s) with your lab.

Key Safety Tests for Water Dispensers

Hot Water Temperature Safety

Water dispensers with a hot water function heat water to 85-95°C for tea and coffee. The hot water tap safety is critical:

  • Child-lock on hot water tap — must require deliberate action to prevent accidental scalding
  • Tap insulation — the tap body must not be too hot to touch
  • Auto-shutoff if hot water tank runs dry (dry-boil protection)
  • Temperature limiting thermostat — prevents water exceeding specified temperature

Cooling System Safety

Dispensers with compressor-based cooling contain refrigerant. Compressor motor thermal protection, refrigerant circuit integrity, and electrical isolation of the compressor from the water circuit are all evaluated.

Water Contact Safety

Internal components in contact with drinking water (tanks, tubing, valves) must be food-safe materials. No harmful leaching from plastic or metal components into the water. This is evaluated alongside IS 302 safety testing.

Bottle-Top vs Plumbed-In

Bottle-top dispensers (19L bottle inverted on top) and plumbed-in dispensers (connected to mains water supply) have different safety considerations. Plumbed-in models have backflow prevention requirements — mains water must not be contaminated by the dispenser's water circuit.

Tip-Over Safety

Floor-standing dispensers with a heavy water bottle on top are potentially unstable. Anti-tip stability testing confirms the dispenser remains stable when the bottle is at various fill levels and when pushed from the side.
