Electric kettles, cordless kettles, and instant water boilers are among the most widely sold kitchen appliances in India and require mandatory BIS ISI mark certification under QCO 2026.
Electric kettles fall under IS 302 Part 2 Section 15 (IEC 60335-2-15) — appliances for heating liquids. Both Part 1 general requirements and Part 2 Sec 15 product-specific requirements apply together.
The most critical safety requirement for kettles. A kettle operated without water (or boiling dry) reaches dangerous temperatures rapidly — the heating element can glow red hot within minutes, potentially igniting plastic components or surfaces beneath. Every kettle must have automatic boil-dry protection that cuts power before dangerous temperatures are reached. Testing verifies this works correctly across thousands of cycles.
The bimetallic strip or NTC thermistor that detects steam when water boils and triggers auto shut-off is tested for reliability. If this mechanism fails, the kettle continues boiling until it either boils dry or the user manually switches it off — creating both safety and energy hazard.
The handle that users grasp to pour must remain within safe touch temperature limits even when the kettle body is at boiling temperature. Thermal insulation between the hot body and handle grip area is evaluated.
The power cord entry point on the kettle is a point of mechanical stress — flexing during lifting and tilting while pouring. The strain relief must prevent the cord from being pulled or bent sharply at the entry point.
Cordless kettles with 360° rotating bases must have the power contacts designed to prevent sparking during kettle placement and removal. The spring-loaded contacts and their gold or silver plating are evaluated for reliability and arcing prevention.
A lid that opens during pouring spills boiling water — a serious burn hazard. Lid security is tested under the forces experienced during normal pouring movements.
