IS 302 Part 1 for Washing Machines: Front-Load, Top-Load, and Semi-Automatic

Washing machines — front-load, top-load automatic, and semi-automatic models — are covered under QCO 2026 and require mandatory BIS ISI mark certification under IS 302 (Part 1):2024.

Applicable IS 302 Part 2 Section

Washing machines fall under IS 302 Part 2 Section 7 (IEC 60335-2-7) — washing machines for household and similar use. Both Part 1 general requirements and Part 2 Sec 7 product-specific requirements apply.

Key Safety Tests

Motor and Drive Safety

Washing machine motors drive the drum through a direct drive or belt-and-pulley system. On heavy wash cycles, the motor is under sustained load. Motor thermal protection must activate before dangerous overheating if the drum is overloaded or jammed. Variable frequency drives (VFDs) in inverter washing machines have additional electronic safety requirements.

Water System Safety

Washing machines handle significant water volumes (45-60L per cycle for top-loaders). Water leak scenarios are carefully evaluated:

• Drain hose disconnection during operation must not cause electrical hazard
• Water must not enter the electrical compartment through condensation or splashing
• Door/lid seal failure must not result in water reaching electrical components

Door Lock Safety (Front-Load)

Front-load washing machines must have a door lock that prevents the door from being opened during the spin cycle (drum spinning at 1,200-1,600 RPM) and during any water-filled cycle. The interlock must be reliable and must fail-safe — if the interlock mechanism fails, the door must not unlock during dangerous conditions.

Spin Cycle Imbalance Safety

If a heavy item loads one side of the drum, the resulting imbalance at high spin speed causes significant vibration. The imbalance detection system must recognize severe imbalance and either redistribute (by additional wash strokes) or reduce spin speed to prevent the machine from walking across the floor or tipping.

Child Safety Lock

Washing machines with a child safety lock feature must demonstrate the lock is effective — children cannot accidentally start the machine or open the door during operation.

Deadline and BEE Rating

Large enterprise: 1 October 2026. Washing machines also require BEE energy star rating — separate from IS 302 safety testing. HOT handles IS 302 washing machine testing.
