Coffee makers, espresso machines, drip coffee machines, pod coffee makers, and electric teapots are covered under QCO 2026 and require mandatory BIS ISI mark certification under IS 302 (Part 1):2024.

Applicable IS 302 Part 2 Section

Hot beverage appliances fall under IS 302 Part 2 Section 15 (IEC 60335-2-15) — appliances for heating liquids. Both Part 1 general requirements and Part 2 Sec 15 product-specific requirements apply.

Key Safety Tests for Coffee Makers

Boiler and Thermoblock Safety

Espresso machines use either a traditional boiler or a thermoblock (instantaneous heater) to heat water to 90-95°C for espresso extraction and 120-140°C steam for milk frothing. The pressure system must be rated for the working pressure (typically 9 bar for espresso). The boiler/thermoblock must have:

  • Pressure relief valve — prevents over-pressurization
  • Thermal cutout — prevents overheating if thermostat fails
  • Low water detection — dry-boil protection if water tank runs empty

Steam Wand Safety

The steam wand on espresso machines dispenses high-temperature steam at pressure — a serious burn hazard. The steam wand must be designed to prevent accidental activation. When not in use, the steam valve must be tightly closed — no steam leakage. The steam wand body temperature must be within safe limits while steam is flowing through it.

High-Pressure Pump Safety

Espresso machines use a vibration pump or rotary pump to create the 9-bar extraction pressure. The pump must not vibrate excessively (stability risk) and must maintain pressure within the specified range. The pump and all pressure-side tubing must be rated for the maximum system pressure.

Drip Coffee Maker Safety

Drip coffee makers heat water to 85-96°C and drip it through the coffee grounds. The heating plate that keeps coffee warm reaches 70-80°C — the carafe base surface must not exceed safe touch temperature. The auto-shutoff after a specified time (typically 2 hours) prevents the empty carafe from overheating.

Pod Coffee Makers (Nespresso-style)

Pod machines puncture the pod with a metal needle under pressure — the needle mechanism is a potential injury point if touched during cleaning. The design must prevent needle access when the machine head is open for pod removal.
