Laundry Appliances BIS Certification: Washing Machines, Dryers, and Dishwashers
Laundry appliances are among the most used household electrical products in India. They are covered under QCO 2026 and require mandatory BIS ISI mark certification.
Products Covered
- Top-loading washing machines (semi-automatic and fully automatic)
- Front-loading washing machines
- Washer-dryer combination machines
- Tumble dryers (vented and condenser)
- Spin dryers
- Dishwashers (built-in and freestanding)
- Cloth dryers (electric heating element type)
Safety Considerations for Washing Machines
Water Ingress and Leakage Safety
Washing machines combine water and electricity — their safety design must prevent water from reaching electrical components under normal use and reasonably foreseeable misuse. IS 302 Part 1 evaluates insulation resistance after the appliance has been subjected to water spray and submersion conditions.
Drum and Agitator Mechanical Safety
The drum or agitator of a washing machine rotates at high speed. Safety interlock mechanisms must prevent operation when the door/lid is open. The standard tests door interlock reliability under repeated operation cycles.
Drum Temperature (For Dryers)
Tumble dryers use heated air to dry clothes. The drum temperature must remain within safe limits, and the exhaust must not create fire hazards. Lint accumulation is a fire risk in dryers — design requirements address lint filter presence and accessibility.
Pump and Drain Safety
Washing machines include water pumps. The pump motor must be protected against overload. Drainage failure scenarios must not create safety hazards.
BEE Star Rating for Washing Machines
Washing machines in India also require BEE star rating for energy efficiency — a separate mandatory requirement from BIS ISI mark. Ensure both certifications are obtained before market launch.
Dishwasher BIS Certification
Dishwashers are relatively new to mandatory BIS certification in India. They combine high-temperature water, detergents, and electricity. The critical safety test is thermal evaluation — the heating element that heats wash water must be properly insulated, and the door seal must prevent hot water leakage.
