Key Safety Requirements

Electric Kettles — Boil-Dry Protection

This is the most critical safety feature for electric kettles. If an electric kettle is switched on without water (dry-boiled), the heating element will overheat rapidly. Mandatory automatic cut-off when the kettle is empty (boil-dry protection) is required under IS 302 Part 2 Sec 15 (appliances for heating liquids). This protection must respond within seconds of the element becoming dry to prevent fire.

Pressure Safety in Espresso Machines

Espresso machines operate at 9-15 bar pressure. Pump seals, boiler seals, and group head seals must withstand this pressure without failure. IS 302 Part 2 requires pressure vessel safety evaluation for appliances containing pressurized steam or water above atmospheric pressure.

Steam Wand Safety (Espresso Machines)

Espresso machines with milk steaming wands release high-temperature steam (130-140°C) through a controlled steam wand. The steam wand design must prevent accidental burns. Safety tests evaluate steam direction and velocity.

Scale/Limescale Effect

Limescale buildup in heating elements is a known safety concern — it can cause element overheating. While IS 302 Part 1 doesn't specifically mandate descaling, the appliance's thermal protection must function correctly even with moderate scale buildup.
