IS 302 Part 1 for Sewing Machines and Textile Appliances

Key Safety Tests for Electric Sewing Machines
Motor and Drive Safety
The sewing machine motor drives the needle and feed mechanism. At high stitch speeds, the needle moves at high frequency. Motor thermal protection is tested — if the mechanism jams (by thick fabric layers), the motor must not overheat before the thermal cutout activates.
Needle Guard and Finger Protection
The needle area is the highest injury risk in a sewing machine. IS 302 Part 2 Sec 28 evaluates the needle guard effectiveness and the design of the presser foot area to minimize accidental needle contact with fingers.
Foot Control (Pedal) Safety
Most electric sewing machines use a foot pedal controller. The pedal contains a variable resistor or electronic speed controller. The pedal cord and connector are subject to mechanical stress — constant stepping and dragging. Pedal insulation and cord strain relief are evaluated.
Lighting
Built-in sewing lights (LED or incandescent) must not create a glare hazard and the lamp housing must not become too hot to touch during extended use.
High-Speed Needle Safety
At maximum stitch speed, needle breakage can result in needle fragment ejection at high velocity. The design must minimize the risk of needle fragment injury — typically through needle guards and presser foot design.
Industrial vs Domestic Sewing Machines
Domestic sewing machines (household use) fall clearly under IS 302 Part 2 Sec 28. Industrial sewing machines used exclusively in garment factories by trained operators may be outside the QCO scope — but when in doubt, certify. Commercial sewing machine shops that sell machines for home use are within scope.
