Microwave Ovens — Special Requirements

Microwave ovens have the most complex certification requirements among kitchen appliances:

  • IS 302 (Part 1):2024 — general safety
  • IS 302 (Part 2, Sec 25) — microwave-specific requirements including radiation leakage testing
  • IS 13833 (the IS version of the international microwave safety standard) may also apply

Microwave radiation leakage testing is a specialized test requiring calibrated radiation measurement equipment. Not all testing labs have this capability — confirm your lab before booking.

Electric Kettles — Safety Focus

Electric kettles have a surprisingly high failure rate in safety testing due to their simple-looking design masking complex requirements:

  • Auto boil-dry protection: Must have automatic cut-off when the element is dry (no water) — prevents fire from forgotten dry kettles
  • Stability test: Kettle must not tip when pulling the cord at specified angles while filled with maximum water
  • Temperature limits on handle
  • Cord storage (for kettles with retractable cord bases)
  • Steam channel: Steam must exit through designed vents, not towards the user's hand

Electric Pressure Cookers — Critical Safety

Electric pressure cookers contain pressurized steam at temperature. IS 302 Part 2 Sec 45 (pressure cooking appliances) has stringent requirements for pressure relief valves, lid locking mechanisms, and high-temperature protection. This is one of the more complex certifications in the kitchen appliance category.

Air Fryers

Air fryers are a relatively new product category. They operate as convection ovens with high-speed fans. They fall under IS 302 Part 1 general requirements and IS 302 Part 2 Sec 11 (tumble dryers/similar hot air appliances) or Sec 9 (grills and toasters) depending on the specific product design. Confirm the applicable Part 2 section with your BIS-recognized testing lab.
