Induction cooktops — portable countertop models and built-in hobs — are among the fastest-growing kitchen appliance categories in India and are covered under QCO 2026 with mandatory BIS ISI mark certification.

Applicable IS 302 Part 2 Section

Induction cooktops fall under IS 302 Part 2 Section 6 (IEC 60335-2-6) — stationary cooking ranges, hobs, ovens, and similar appliances. Both Part 1 general requirements and Part 2 Sec 6 product-specific requirements apply.

How Induction Cooking Works and Safety Implications

Induction cooktops generate a high-frequency alternating magnetic field that induces eddy currents in ferromagnetic cookware, heating the cookware directly. This means the cooktop surface itself does not get hot — only the cookware does. However, there are significant electrical safety considerations:

High-Power Inverter Circuit

Induction cooktops use an IGBT-based high-frequency inverter driving the induction coil. This inverter operates at mains voltage (230V) and high frequency (20-50 kHz). IS 302 Part 2 Sec 6 evaluates the inverter circuit's electrical insulation, thermal performance, and fault conditions.

Residual Heat Warning

While the glass-ceramic surface doesn't generate its own heat, it heats up by conduction from hot cookware. After cooking, the surface remains hot enough to cause burns. Residual heat indicators (typically LED "H" displays) are required to warn users the surface is still hot even after the cooktop is switched off.

Pan Detection Safety

Induction cooktops must detect whether a suitable pan is present before energizing the coil. If energized without a pan, the high-frequency magnetic field could cause interference with nearby electronics or heating of metallic objects (rings, cutlery) placed on the surface. Pan detection reliability is evaluated.

EMC Considerations

High-frequency induction cooking generates significant electromagnetic interference. EMC compliance (IS 13947 / CISPR standards) is evaluated alongside IS 302 safety testing.

Built-In Hob Installation Safety

Built-in induction hobs are installed cut into kitchen countertops. The installation instructions must specify correct cutout dimensions and adequate ventilation — insufficient ventilation causes thermal problems. The hob must be safe even if installed incorrectly within reasonable limits.
