High Power, High Risk

Electric cooking ranges are among the highest-power household appliances — with total installed power often 4-8 kW. This places them in the PS3 (above 240VA) category under IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 framework. The high power levels require proportionally more stringent insulation and safety measures.

Radiant Hob Safety

Radiant hobs use incandescent ribbon elements under a glass-ceramic surface. The glass-ceramic surface can reach 400°C+ in the cooking zone. IS 302 Part 2 Sec 6 (stationary cooking ranges) and related sections govern the maximum temperature of accessible surfaces outside the cooking zone. Non-cooking zone surfaces must not exceed safe touch temperature limits.

Hot Zone Indicators

Ceramic hobs are particularly hazardous because the glass surface looks the same whether hot or cold. IS 302 requires that hobs have hot zone indicator lights that remain illuminated until the surface has cooled to safe temperatures.

Oven Thermostat

Built-in ovens must have accurate thermostat control and must cut off before exceeding maximum temperature. The door seal must maintain oven temperature without excessive external surface temperature.

Installation Requirements

Electric cooking ranges require specific installation (hardwired, dedicated circuit). IS 302 Part 1 requirements for installation conditions must be addressed in the product documentation.
