Induction Cooktops BIS Certification Under IS 302 Part 1 QCO 2026

Induction cooktops have rapidly grown in popularity in India as an energy-efficient cooking alternative. They are covered under QCO 2026 and require mandatory BIS ISI mark certification under IS 302 (Part 1):2024.

Products Covered

  • Single-coil induction cooktops
  • Double-coil induction cooktops
  • Built-in induction hobs
  • Commercial induction cooktops (within voltage scope)
  • Portable induction cooktops

Induction-Specific Safety Considerations

Electromagnetic Field (EMF)

Induction cooktops generate electromagnetic fields to heat pots through induction. While IS 302 Part 1 is an electrical safety standard (not an EMF exposure standard), the power electronics that generate the induction field are evaluated for electrical safety. The inverter circuit operating at high frequency requires proper insulation.

Touch Current and Body EMF

Induction cooktops can induce small eddy currents in nearby conductive objects and in the user's body. Touch current evaluation under IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 framework (relevant IS 302 methodology) evaluates the accessible touch current.

Thermal Cut-Off — Pot Detection

Induction cooktops must detect when a pot is removed and cut off the magnetic field. If the induction field continues without a pot, the cooktop can overheat. Pot detection and automatic cut-off is a required safety feature.

High-Voltage Inverter Circuit

The power electronics in induction cooktops include IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) circuits operating at potentially dangerous voltages. These high-voltage internal circuits must be properly insulated from accessible surfaces (control panel, glass surface).

Glass Ceramic Surface

The glass ceramic cooking surface must withstand thermal shock (sudden temperature changes), mechanical impact, and must maintain electrical insulation between the high-frequency induction coil and the cooking surface.
