IS 302 Part 1 for Electric Irons: Heavy Use, Steam Irons, and Garment Steamers

Electric irons, steam irons, and garment steamers are among the most widely used home appliances in India and have been under mandatory BIS ISI mark certification for many years. QCO 2026 reinforces and updates this requirement under IS 302 (Part 1):2024.

Applicable IS 302 Part 2 Section

Electric irons fall under IS 302 Part 2 Section 3 (IEC 60335-2-3) — electric irons. Both Part 1 and Part 2 Sec 3 apply together.

Key Safety Tests

Soleplate Temperature Control

The iron's soleplate reaches 110-230°C depending on the fabric setting. The temperature control (thermostat) must accurately maintain the set temperature within specified tolerances — too hot and it scorches fabric and potentially causes burns; too cold and it fails to perform. Temperature stability across the soleplate surface is also evaluated.

Steam System Safety

Steam irons generate steam from water heated in a sealed chamber. Safety requirements:

  • Steam chamber must be rated for the maximum working pressure generated
  • Steam vents must not direct steam toward the user's hand during normal use
  • Anti-drip mechanism when iron is at temperatures too low to generate clean steam — prevents water dripping onto fabric
  • Self-clean or anti-calc function must operate safely without steam or boiling water ejection hazard

Handle Temperature

The handle that users grasp during ironing must remain within safe touch temperature limits even during extended ironing sessions. The handle material and thermal insulation from the hot soleplate are evaluated.

Auto Shut-Off

Modern irons with auto shut-off (safety iron feature) must detect when the iron has been left stationary face-down or on its side and cut power within the specified time. The accelerometer or timer mechanism reliability is tested.

Cord and Cord Set

The iron's power cord is subjected to constant movement — ironing involves swinging the iron back and forth. The cord must be flexible enough for this motion and must connect at the iron body with adequate strain relief and a rotating or flexible cord protector.

Commercial and Industrial Irons

Commercial irons (garment factories, laundries, dry cleaners) use higher wattage irons (2,000-3,000W) often connected to steam boiler systems. These commercial irons are within QCO scope if they fall within the voltage limits. Deadline: 1 October 2026. HOT handles IS 302 iron testing.
