IS 302 Part 1 for Electric Barbecues and Outdoor Grills
Electric barbecues, outdoor grills, and tabletop electric grills are covered under QCO 2026 and require BIS ISI mark certification under IS 302 (Part 1):2024.
Applicable IS 302 Part 2 Section
IS 302 Part 2 Section 9 (IEC 60335-2-9) covers grills, toasters, and similar portable cooking appliances — including electric barbecues and tabletop grills.
Key Safety Tests
Heating Element Temperature
Electric grills operate at very high temperatures — grill surface temperatures of 250-350°C during use. While these internal cooking temperatures are expected, the external housing, handle, and base must remain within safe touch temperature limits. The thermal design must channel heat to the cooking surface while keeping external surfaces safe.
Grease and Fat Accumulation
Grilling produces grease that drips into the collection tray. The design must prevent accumulated grease from reaching the heating element or electrical components. The grease collection system must not overflow during normal use.
Splatter Guard Safety
Many grills have a splatter guard or lid. If the lid has a steam vent, the vent placement must not direct steam toward users. Condensation inside the lid must drain safely.
Outdoor Use Considerations
Products marketed for outdoor use must have appropriate IP rating for their intended environment. A product used outdoors during light rain needs at minimum IPX1 (drip-proof) protection. The cable and plug must also be suitable for outdoor environments.
Anti-Tilt Safety
A hot grill that tips over creates serious burn and fire hazards. Stability testing confirms the grill remains stable when pushed from the side and when the heaviest food load is placed at the edge of the cooking surface.
Deadline
Large enterprise deadline: 1 October 2026. House of Testing handles IS 302 testing for grills and outdoor cooking appliances.
