Electric Irons, Fabric Steamers and Clothes Care Appliances: IS 302 Part 1 Guide

Electric irons and fabric care appliances are high-volume consumer products in India. They are explicitly listed under QCO 2026 and require mandatory BIS ISI mark certification under IS 302 (Part 1):2024.

Safety Considerations Specific to Irons and Steamers

Heating Element Safety

Electric irons use a resistive heating element that reaches 200°C+. IS 302 Part 1 evaluates the insulation of the heating element, ensuring the live element is properly insulated from the soleplate (the touchable metal surface). If the insulation fails, the soleplate becomes live — a very dangerous shock hazard.

The standard requires that even after the abnormal condition of insulation failure, accessible parts do not become lethally energized.

Steam Circuit Safety (For Steam Irons)

Steam irons pressurize water to generate steam. The steam vents must be designed so hot steam exits through intended vents and not through the user's hand. The safety tests include pressure relief under fault conditions.

Temperature Limits on Handle

The iron handle is grasped during use. IS 302 Part 1 specifies maximum temperature limits for grasped surfaces — typically no more than 50°C above ambient for metal handles, somewhat higher for non-metal handles.

Automatic Cut-Off Requirement

IS 302 Part 2 Sec 3 (aligned with IEC 60335-2-3 — Irons) requires that irons left unattended in the horizontal position (flat on their soleplate) automatically shut off after a defined time. This is a critical safety feature to prevent fires from forgotten irons. Verify your product has automatic cut-off capability before testing.

Anti-Drop Safety

The cord of a steam iron is typically inserted at a specific angle. The cord entry must be designed to prevent damage if the iron is dropped while plugged in.

Like all appliances under QCO 2026, both IS 302 (Part 1):2024 (general requirements) and IS 302 Part 2 Sec 3 (specific to irons) apply. Ensure your testing scope covers both.
