IS 302 Appliance Testing Failure: Recovery Steps and Retest Process

A test failure in IS 302 Part 1 testing is not the end of the road. Here is how to recover efficiently and get to a passing result.

Step 1: Understand the Exact Failure

Test reports specify the exact clause that failed and the measured vs. required values. Read carefully — or have HOT's technical team explain what failed and by how much.

Common IS 302 Part 1 Failures

  • Surface temperature exceeded limits during normal or abnormal operation
  • Dielectric strength failure (insulation broke down at test voltage)
  • Safety interlock failure (guard removed = motor still ran)
  • Auto cut-off not functioning (boil-dry, anti-tilt, thermal protection)
  • Marking failure (required marking missing from product surface)
  • Creepage/clearance distance below minimum required

Step 2: Determine Fix Needed

Some fixes don't require hardware redesign (marking failures, minor wiring rerouting). Others do (thermal design improvement, safety interlock redesign, thermoprotector replacement).

Step 3: Implement, Document, Re-Test

Document every change made. Re-submit for re-testing — re-test typically covers only the failed clauses (not a full re-test), which is faster and less expensive than the initial test.

Step 4: Proceed to BIS Application

A test failure history is normal and does NOT prevent ISI mark certification. BIS only sees the final passing test report.
