Electric juicers, centrifugal juice extractors, cold press juicers, and citrus squeezers are covered under QCO 2026 and require mandatory BIS ISI mark certification.

Applicable IS 302 Part 2 Section

Juicers fall under IS 302 Part 2 Section 45 (IEC 60335-2-45) which covers portable heating tools and similar appliances, or Section 14 (IEC 60335-2-14) — kitchen machines. Centrifugal juicers with fast-spinning baskets are most commonly evaluated under Sec 14. Confirm the correct section with your BIS-recognized lab before testing.

Key Safety Tests

High-Speed Basket and Blade Safety

Centrifugal juicers spin their filtering basket at 6,000-14,000 RPM. The safety interlock that prevents operation with the lid open is critical — if the basket is accessible while spinning, contact with the rotating basket can cause serious injury. The interlock must be:

  • Impossible to bypass during normal use
  • Reliable across thousands of operating cycles
  • Effective even if liquid or fruit pulp enters the mechanism

Blade Accessibility

The cutting blade in juicers must not be accessible through the feed tube by fingers or small objects during operation. Finger probe and test rod accessibility tests verify protection against accidental blade contact.

Motor Thermal Protection

Juicer motors are loaded heavily when processing hard fruits and vegetables. Thermal protection must activate before motor overheating if the motor becomes blocked by a hard object or overloaded by thick produce.

Liquid Ingress Protection for Motor

Juice and liquid inevitably end up near the motor during juicing. The motor compartment design must prevent liquid from reaching electrical windings. This is typically verified through operation tests with liquid overflow scenarios.

Cold Press Juicers — Slow Auger Safety

Cold press (masticating) juicers use a slow-turning auger (typically 40-80 RPM) rather than a high-speed spinning basket. The low speed eliminates the high-speed rotation hazard but introduces the finger-pull-in hazard — fingers placed near the auger entry could be pulled in. Guards and feed chute design are evaluated.
