Electric ovens, microwave ovens, convection microwaves, and countertop ovens (OTG — Oven Toaster Griller) are covered under QCO 2026 and require mandatory BIS ISI mark certification under IS 302 (Part 1):2024.

Microwave-Specific Safety Tests (IS 302 Part 2 Sec 25)

Microwave Leakage

The most critical test for microwave ovens. Microwave radiation (2.45 GHz) can cause biological damage — particularly to eyes and testes which lack blood flow to dissipate heat. IS 302 Part 2 Sec 25 sets a strict leakage limit of 5 mW/cm² at 5 cm from the oven surface. Microwave leakage is measured with a calibrated microwave survey meter at multiple points around the oven perimeter, before and after testing, with a water load in the cavity.

Door Seal Safety

The door seal is critical to preventing microwave leakage. The door seal condition and door hinge reliability are tested through 100,000 door opening/closing cycles — simulating years of use. The microwave leakage measurement is repeated after this endurance test.

Interlock System

Microwave ovens must have at least two independent door interlocks that cut microwave power when the door is opened. A single-interlock failure must not result in microwave operation with the door open. The secondary interlock monitors the primary. If both primary interlocks fail simultaneously, a safety monitor blows a fuse — catastrophic failure safe mode.

High Voltage Capacitor Safety

Microwave ovens use a high-voltage circuit (typically 2,000-4,000V DC) to power the magnetron. After disconnecting mains power, dangerous charge remains in the high-voltage capacitor. The capacitor must have a bleed resistor that discharges it to safe levels within a specified time after power disconnection — preventing technician electrocution during servicing.

Electric Oven and OTG Safety

OTGs reach 250-280°C during grill operation. External surface temperatures, element thermal cutout (fire prevention if elements overheat), and door handle temperature are key tests.
