Air Fryers and Modern Kitchen Appliances: IS 302 Part 1 BIS Certification

Air fryers have become one of India's fastest-growing kitchen appliance categories. They are covered under QCO 2026 and require mandatory BIS ISI mark certification under IS 302 (Part 1):2024.

Products Covered

  • Standard basket-type air fryers
  • Air fryer ovens (combination air fryer/oven/toaster)
  • Air fryer lids for pressure cookers
  • Rotisserie-style air fryers
  • Large capacity family air fryers

What Is an Air Fryer in IS 302 Context?

An air fryer is essentially a high-speed convection oven with a heating element and powerful fan that circulates very hot air. Under IS 302, it is evaluated as a cooking appliance. The applicable IS 302 Part 2 sections depend on the specific design: Sec 9 (grills, toasters) or Sec 6 (ovens) are typically applicable — confirm with your BIS-recognized lab.

Key Safety Tests

Thermal Safety — Housing Temperature

Air fryers operate at 180-220°C internally. The external basket, handle, and housing surfaces must stay within safe temperature limits. The handle that users grasp to remove the basket is particularly critical — it must remain safe to touch even when the internal temperature is at maximum.

Heating Element Insulation

The sheathed heating element at the top of the air fryer must maintain proper insulation from the accessible metal housing even at extended operating temperatures.

Auto Shutoff When Basket Removed

Modern air fryers should automatically shut off the heating element when the basket is removed mid-cycle. This safety interlock prevents burns from the active heating element being exposed. IS 302 Part 2 evaluates this interlock reliability.

Grease and Food Particle Accumulation

Air fryers accumulate grease and food particles over time. The design must not allow accumulated grease to reach the heating element or electrical components in a way that creates fire or shock hazard.
