IS 302 Part 1 for Electric Shavers and Dry Grooming Appliances
Electric shavers, beard trimmers, hair clippers, and related dry grooming appliances are covered under QCO 2026 and require BIS ISI mark certification under IS 302 (Part 1):2024.
Applicable IS 302 Part 2 Section
IS 302 Part 2 Section 8 (IEC 60335-2-8) specifically covers shavers, hair clippers, and similar appliances. Both Part 1 (general) and Part 2 Sec 8 (product-specific) apply together.
Key Safety Tests
Motor Insulation and Touch Current
The motor in an electric shaver drives the cutting head at high speed. The motor windings must be properly insulated from the metallic cutting head that contacts skin. Touch current at the shaving head must be within ES1 limits — it cannot present a risk of electric shock to the user during normal shaving.
Shaving Head Guard Safety
The outer foil or guard on the shaving head protects the skin from direct contact with the cutting blades. The guard must not have sharp edges that could cut skin. If the guard is removed (for cleaning), the exposed blades must decelerate to a safe speed within a specified time.
Motor Thermal Protection
If the shaving head becomes jammed (by thick hair or a mechanical obstruction), the motor draws locked-rotor current and heats rapidly. Thermal protection must activate before the motor or housing reaches dangerous temperatures.
Wet Use Models — IPX Ratings
Shavers marketed as wet/dry (usable in shower or with shaving foam) must have appropriate IP protection tested and demonstrated:
- IPX5: Protected against water jets — usable in shower
- IPX7: Submersible to 1m for 30 minutes — usable fully submerged in sink
The IP rating must be tested and verified — not merely declared.
Rechargeable Battery Safety
Most modern shavers are rechargeable. Battery safety evaluation includes overcharge protection, over-temperature protection, and charging circuit safety. USB-C charged shavers: USB PD compatibility evaluation.
