Electric Massage Devices and Personal Wellness Appliances: IS 302 Part 1 Guide
Electric Massage Devices and Personal Wellness Appliances: IS 302 Part 1 Guide
Electric massage devices, vibration therapy products, and personal wellness appliances have emerged as a growing product category in India. They are covered under QCO 2026 and require mandatory BIS ISI mark certification.
Products Covered
- Electric back massagers and massage chairs (partial)
- Handheld percussion massagers
- Foot massagers and leg massagers
- TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) devices (consumer type)
- Vibrating massage pillows and cushions
- Eye massagers
Body Contact Safety
Massage devices are applied directly to the human body. This creates specific safety requirements:
- Touch current limits for body-contact surfaces are more stringent than for products only handled briefly
- For mains-connected massage devices, the isolation between mains circuits and the user's body must be absolute
- TENS devices (which pass electrical current through the body) require additional evaluation of the therapeutic current levels to ensure they remain within physiologically safe limits
Thermal Safety for Body Contact
Heated massage devices (those with integrated heating pads or heating elements) must maintain safe surface temperatures. IS 302 Part 1 surface temperature limits for products in continuous body contact are more stringent than for non-contact products.
Battery-Powered Portables
Many handheld massage devices are battery-powered with USB-C charging. Lithium battery safety and USB-C charging circuit evaluation apply as for other rechargeable devices.
Medical vs Consumer Grade
Products with therapeutic claims (pain treatment, medical diagnosis) may be classified as medical devices under CDSCO (Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation) regulations — separate from and in addition to BIS requirements. Consumer wellness products without medical claims fall under IS 302 / QCO 2026.
