BIS Quality Marking on Products: Understanding the ISI Mark Symbol
The ISI mark is India's most recognized quality certification symbol. Understanding what it means, what it guarantees, and how to read it is essential for manufacturers, importers, and consumers.
What Does the ISI Mark Mean?
The ISI (Indian Standards Institution) mark — now the BIS Certification Mark — is a guarantee that the product has been:
- Tested against the applicable Indian Standard by a BIS-recognized laboratory
- Manufactured in a factory that has been inspected and approved by BIS
- Covered by an ongoing BIS licence that requires periodic factory surveillance
- Subjected to market surveillance — products can be purchased and tested by BIS at any time
Anatomy of the ISI Mark
A complete ISI mark consists of:
- The BIS logo: The stylized letters "BIS" within a circle with the ISI mark below
- The IS number: The applicable Indian Standard (e.g., IS 302)
- The CM/L number: The licence number unique to each licensee (e.g., CM/L-1234567)
A genuine ISI mark always has all three elements. The CM/L number is how consumers and procurement teams can verify the mark's authenticity on the BIS portal.
ISI Mark vs BIS CRS R-Number
Two distinct BIS certification symbols are commonly confused:
- ISI Mark (CM/L number): For products under mandatory ISI mark schemes (appliances, cables, cement, steel, etc.)
- BIS CRS logo with R-number: For electronics and IT products under the Compulsory Registration Scheme
Both are BIS marks but they come from different schemes with different processes and different mark formats.
What the ISI Mark Does NOT Guarantee
- It does not guarantee the specific product in your hand was tested — only that the product design/model was tested and the factory is approved
- It does not guarantee the product was manufactured recently — the licence may be old
- It does not substitute for domain-specific safety checks — a BIS-certified gas regulator still needs professional installation
Fake ISI Marks — A Serious Problem
Counterfeiting of ISI marks is common — particularly on cables, fasteners, and helmets. BIS has introduced holographic stickers and QR code verification on some product categories. Always verify the CM/L number on the BIS portal or BIS Care app before accepting ISI-marked products in procurement.
