BIS India's Role in ISO, IEC, and the Global Standards Ecosystem

BIS is not just India's national standards body — it is an active player in the global standards ecosystem with practical implications for manufacturers operating in multiple markets.

BIS Membership in International Bodies

  • ISO: BIS is India's ISO member body. India participates in hundreds of ISO technical committees.
  • IEC: BIS represents India in IEC. Relevant for IS/IEC standards — IS/IEC 62368-1:2023, IS/IEC 60335-1:2024, etc. are IEC standards adopted by India.
  • IAF: BIS participates via NABCB — ensuring BIS MSCS certificates are internationally recognized.
  • OIML: BIS participates for weights and measures standardization.

The CB Scheme: International Test Report Mutual Recognition

India participates in the IECEE CB Scheme. BIS-recognized CBTLs (CB Testing Laboratories) can issue CB Test Reports accepted in other participating countries. Conversely, foreign CB Test Reports from accredited CBTLs can be used as the basis for IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 testing in India (with India-specific delta tests where needed). This can significantly reduce testing cost and time for international products entering India.

Practical Benefits for Indian Manufacturers

  • IS/IEC standards tested in India have significant overlap with international requirements
  • Products certified in India against IS/IEC standards often need minimal additional testing for other markets
  • India's growing international standards engagement (AI, sustainability) means future standards will align even more closely

India's Growing Influence

India is increasing engagement in international standards bodies, particularly in AI and digital technology (ISO/IEC JTC 1), sustainability standards, and pharmaceutical standards. This will increase Indian industry's ability to shape international standards rather than only adopting them.
