Refrigerators and freezers are among the most significant appliances in Indian households and commercial establishments. They are covered under QCO 2026 and require mandatory BIS ISI mark certification.
Refrigerators in India have historically been certified under IS 1618 (the specific product standard for refrigerators). Under QCO 2026, IS 302 (Part 1):2024 is the mandated standard. Manufacturers should verify with BIS whether IS 302 Part 1 requirements are additive to existing IS 1618 requirements or replacing them for the QCO purposes. Confirm the applicable testing scope with your BIS-recognized laboratory.
The compressor motor must have overload protection. IS 302 Part 1 evaluates the compressor electrical protection under stall/locked rotor conditions.
Refrigerators with auto-defrost include a heating element and timer/sensor for the defrost cycle. The defrost heater circuit must be properly isolated and the defrost terminator (bimetal switch) must function correctly to prevent runaway heating.
Modern refrigerators increasingly use flammable refrigerants (R-600a, isobutane) or low-GWP refrigerants. For flammable refrigerant models, IS 302 Part 2 Sec 24 (refrigerating appliances) has specific requirements for charge quantity limits and ignition source prevention.
Refrigerators also require BEE star rating — a separate mandatory requirement for energy efficiency. Ensure both BIS ISI mark AND BEE star rating are in place.
