IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 for Digital Cameras and Imaging Equipment

IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 for Digital Cameras and Imaging Equipment

Digital cameras, mirrorless cameras, DSLRs, action cameras, and professional imaging equipment require BIS CRS registration under IS/IEC 62368-1:2023, migrating from IS 13252.

Products Covered

  • Consumer digital cameras (point-and-shoot, mirrorless, DSLR)
  • Action cameras (waterproof, ruggedized)
  • Professional video cameras and cinema cameras
  • Webcams and USB cameras
  • 360-degree cameras
  • Thermal imaging cameras (non-medical)
  • Camera accessories with power electronics (battery grips, external flash units)

Key Safety Considerations

Battery Pack Safety

Camera batteries (typically 7.2V lithium-ion, 1,000-2,000mAh) are a significant safety component. The battery management in the camera and the charger are both evaluated. IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 requires cell-level certifications and BMS evaluation for all lithium battery systems.

Flash Unit Safety

Built-in and external camera flash units use high-voltage capacitor discharge to generate the flash pulse — voltages of 300-400V in the capacitor circuit. This high-voltage circuit requires careful evaluation under IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 — insulation between the HV capacitor circuit and accessible surfaces must prevent PS3-level energy access.

Laser Autofocus Safety

Many modern cameras and smartphones use laser phase detection autofocus systems. The laser must be classified under IEC 60825 (laser product safety) — typically Class 1 (safe under reasonably foreseeable conditions) or Class 1M. Laser classification must be documented and marked.

Lens Mount and Interchangeable Lens Systems

Mirrorless and DSLR cameras have electronic contacts on the lens mount that communicate with and power the lens. The electronic interface must not present shock hazard even when a lens is removed or a non-compatible accessory is attached.

Action Camera Waterproofing

Action cameras marketed as waterproof must have their IP/WR rating tested — not declared. The housing seal, button seal, and port cover integrity are all tested against the claimed IP rating under IEC 60529.

Migration Timeline

IS 13252 → IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 migration deadline: November 2028. Camera importers with large portfolios should plan migration strategy early. House of Testing handles IS 62368 camera and imaging equipment testing.
