Finding the Right BIS-Recognized Lab: What to Check Before Submitting Samples

Choosing the wrong BIS-recognized laboratory — one not recognized for your specific product and standard — means your test reports won't be accepted for BIS registration. Here is how to choose correctly.

Step 1: Know Your Exact Standard

Identify the precise IS standard and edition required: IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 (not just IS 62368), IS 302 (Part 1):2024, IS 16102 Part 1:2022, etc. Lab recognition is standard-specific and edition-specific.

Step 2: Check BIS Recognized Lab List

Go to bis.gov.in → Conformity Assessment → Recognized Laboratories. Filter by the specific standard. This shows lab names, addresses, and recognized scope.

Step 3: Call and Confirm BEFORE Submitting Samples

The BIS list may not be current. Before submitting any samples:

  • Call the lab: "Are you currently BIS-recognized for IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 for [your specific product category]?"
  • Confirm the recognition is active (not expired or suspended)
  • Ask about current testing turnaround time
  • Ask if they can perform pre-compliance gap analysis

Step 4: Evaluate Service Quality

  • Turnaround time and queue length
  • Communication quality during testing
  • Experience with your specific product type
  • Whether they handle BIS portal submission guidance
