How to Apply for BIS CRS Registration: Complete Step-by-Step Guide 2026

The BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) is mandatory for electronics and IT products covered under the Compulsory Registration Order (CRO) 2021. This comprehensive guide covers the entire application process for 2026.

What Is BIS CRS Registration?

BIS CRS (Compulsory Registration Scheme) is different from the ISI mark scheme. Under CRS:

  • Products are registered with a unique R-number (Registration Number)
  • The registration is held by the manufacturer or importer (not BIS)
  • Testing is done at BIS-recognized laboratories
  • BIS approves the registration after scrutinizing the documentation
  • The R-number must be displayed on the product and packaging

Step 1: Determine If Your Product Needs CRS Registration

Check the Compulsory Registration Order (CRO) 2021 and subsequent amendments. Products covered include IT equipment, audio/video equipment, lighting products, solar photovoltaic products, and certain battery products. If your product is listed, CRS registration is mandatory before selling or importing.

Step 2: Determine the Applicable Standard

Each product category has a specific Indian Standard. For IT equipment: IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 (new) or legacy IS 13252 (for existing registrations only). For LED products: applicable IS 16102/IS 10322 standards. Confirm the correct current standard with a BIS-recognized testing lab.

Step 3: Get Your Product Tested

  • Select a BIS-recognized laboratory — check the BIS website for the current list of recognized labs for your specific product and standard
  • Submit product samples (typically 3-5 samples per model)
  • Testing typically takes 3-6 weeks depending on product complexity
  • You receive a test report upon completion

Step 4: Prepare Your Application Documents

  • Test report from BIS-recognized lab
  • Company registration documents (Indian company or AIR for foreign manufacturers)
  • GST registration certificate
  • Declaration of conformity
  • Product and packaging photos showing proposed BIS marking
  • Brand authorization letter (if registering under a different brand)

Step 5: Submit Application on BIS Portal

Go to www.crsbis.in or www.manakonline.in → CRS Registration → New Application. Fill in product details, upload documents, and pay the application fee. BIS scrutinizes the application and may raise deficiency queries. Respond promptly to deficiency queries to avoid delays.

Step 6: Receive Registration Certificate

Upon approval, BIS issues a Registration Certificate with your unique R-number. The R-number is valid for 2 years and must be displayed on all product units and packaging.

Timeline

End-to-end: 10-16 weeks for straightforward applications. Complex products or incomplete applications take longer. Plan accordingly.
