BIS-recognized laboratories are the backbone of India's mandatory product certification system. Every test report accepted for BIS CRS registration or ISI mark application must come from a BIS-recognized laboratory. This guide explains how labs get and maintain BIS recognition.
A BIS-recognized laboratory is officially recognized by BIS to conduct testing for BIS certification purposes. Test reports from recognized labs are accepted for CRS registration, ISI mark applications, and other BIS schemes. Test reports from non-recognized labs — regardless of the lab's other accreditations — are not accepted for BIS purposes.
For private laboratories, NABL (National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories) accreditation is typically required before BIS recognition. NABL accreditation (aligned with ISO/IEC 17025) demonstrates the lab's technical competence and measurement traceability.
BIS recognition is granted for specific product categories and specific standards. A laboratory recognized for IS 302 Part 1 testing may not be recognized for IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 testing unless they separately applied and demonstrated capability.
The laboratory must demonstrate appropriate testing equipment, calibrated to traceable standards, with documented maintenance and calibration schedules.
Technical staff must have appropriate qualifications and experience for the product categories being tested.
BIS recognition requires annual renewal and surveillance audits. Maintaining NABL accreditation is a continuous requirement.
House of Testing (HOT) is a BIS-recognized testing laboratory. We maintain our recognition through rigorous quality standards and continuous NABL surveillance.
