IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 Product Markings: Complete Checklist of What Must Be on the Product
Marking failures are among the most common and avoidable BIS test failures. Check your product markings against this checklist before formal testing.
Must Be ON the Product Itself
- Manufacturer name or trademark
- Model designation or type reference
- Rated voltage or voltage range (e.g., 220-240V~)
- Rated frequency: 50 Hz
- Rated power input or current
- Insulation class symbol: earth symbol (⏚) for Class I; double square (□□) for Class II
- BIS R-number space (must be provided even on pre-registration samples)
- Country of manufacture
Marking Durability Test
IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 tests durability by rubbing with water-soaked cloth (15 seconds) then petroleum spirit-soaked cloth (15 seconds). Markings must remain legible throughout. Stick-on labels very commonly fail this test. Engraved, moulded-in, or pad-printed markings are far more durable.
Common Marking Failures
- Rated wattage only on packaging, not on product
- Country of manufacture only on packaging
- Insulation class symbol missing
- Label peels off during durability test
- Incorrect voltage range marked (e.g., 230V only for a 100-240V product)
USB-C and Battery Products
- USB-C PD products: rated input power of USB-C port should be marked
- Non-removable lithium battery products: rated capacity in mAh or Wh recommended
Review markings against this checklist before submitting samples. Marking failures are easy to fix before testing but wasteful to fix after a formal test failure.
