IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 for Projectors and Display Technology: BIS Migration Guide

Projectors and display technology products registered under IS 616:2017 must migrate to IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 by November 2028. This guide covers the specific requirements for this product category.

Products Covered

  • DLP, LCD, and laser projectors (home theatre, business, education)
  • Pico projectors and portable projectors
  • Interactive projectors with touch capability
  • Laser display systems
  • Digital signage displays

Laser Projectors — Optical Radiation Safety

Laser projectors present unique safety considerations that go beyond IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 electrical safety. The standard addresses laser radiation hazards under its radiation safety chapter. Laser projectors may also need to comply with IEC 62471-5 (photobiological safety of laser display systems) or IEC 60825 (laser product safety classification). Confirm the applicable optical safety standard with your BIS-recognized lab before testing.

High-Voltage Lamp Supply

Traditional lamp-based projectors (UHP, HID lamps) use high-voltage ignition circuits (3,000-10,000V) to start the lamp. These internal high-voltage circuits require careful safety evaluation under IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 — insulation must prevent the PS3-class energy from reaching accessible surfaces even during lamp ignition transients.

Thermal Management

Projectors generate significant heat from lamps or laser modules. Fan systems maintain safe operating temperatures. IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 thermal requirements evaluate surface temperatures and the automatic shutdown behaviour when fans fail or airflow is blocked.

Cooling Fan Failure Safety

If a projector's cooling fan fails while powered on, temperatures can rise rapidly. The safety design must detect overtemperature and automatically shut down before accessible surfaces or internal components reach hazardous temperatures.

Migration Timeline

Migrate from IS 616 to IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 via Standard Revision. Deadline: 1 November 2028. Typical migration timeline: 6-10 weeks for standard projectors, longer for laser projectors with optical safety evaluation. House of Testing handles IS 62368 projector testing.
