IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 for Point-of-Sale and Payment Terminals

Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals, payment devices, and related commercial transaction equipment require IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 BIS CRS registration in India.

Products Covered

  • Traditional POS terminals (card-present payment devices)
  • mPOS (mobile POS) devices
  • Android-based smart POS terminals
  • QR code payment scanners
  • Self-checkout kiosks (within voltage scope)
  • Biometric payment terminals
  • Receipt printers (thermal)

Classification Under IS/IEC 62368-1:2023

POS terminals were previously registered under IS 13252 (as IT equipment). Their migration to IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 is straightforward for most standard POS devices — they are typically PS2 power sources operating at low voltage. Smart POS terminals with large displays may have higher power consumption.

Battery Safety in mPOS Devices

Mobile POS devices use lithium batteries and charge via USB or proprietary cables. Full battery safety evaluation — overcharge protection, temperature management, and cell documentation — is required under IS/IEC 62368-1:2023.

Security Certifications Are Separate

POS terminals in India must also comply with payment security standards such as PCI DSS and EMVCo certification — these are financial and payment industry requirements, completely separate from BIS safety certification. IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 covers electrical safety only.

Commercial Use Consideration

POS terminals are commercial/professional products. They are handled primarily by trained staff rather than general consumers. IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 applies regardless — the standard covers both consumer and commercial IT equipment. Migration deadline: November 2028. HOT handles IS 62368 POS terminal testing.
