IS 62368 vs LED Standards: Why Lighting Products Are Not Affected

LED lighting manufacturers often worry that IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 changes their certification requirements. It does not — LED lighting standards remain fully in effect and are separate from the IS 62368 transition.

IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 Covers IT and AV Equipment

The IS 62368 transition affects products that were under IS 13252 (IT equipment) and IS 616 (audio/video equipment). LED lamps, LED luminaires, and LED modules are not IT or AV equipment — they have their own dedicated standards.

LED Product Standards (Unchanged)

  • IS 16102 Part 1: LED retrofit lamps
  • IS 16103 Part 1: LED modules
  • IS 10322 series: All luminaire types
  • IS 16614 Part 1: LED tube lights
  • IS 16047 Part 3: Secondary lithium cells (for LED products with batteries)

These standards are NOT being replaced by IS/IEC 62368-1:2023. LED manufacturers should continue testing and certifying under these standards.

The One Exception: LED Drivers (SMPS)

LED drivers — the SMPS power supplies used in LED products — are subject to IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 if they were previously under IS 13252 as standalone SMPS products. The luminaire itself continues under IS 10322; the driver unit if separately registered needs IS 62368 migration. External LED drivers should be checked for their BIS registration standard and migrated if registered under IS 13252.

Smart LED Products With IT Functions

Smart LED products with significant IT functionality (connected to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, with embedded processors) may need both IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 (for IT features) AND IS 16102/IS 10322 (for LED/lighting safety). Confirm the dual-standard requirement for connected LED products with your BIS-recognized lab.
