One of the powerful new capabilities of the Manakonline Platform is Geographic Information System (GIS) integration across multiple BIS certification and operational functions. GIS-enabling BIS processes transforms how inspections are planned, labs are located, and compliance patterns are analyzed across India's vast geography.

What GIS Means in the BIS Context

GIS technology will be embedded across the new platform, enabling spatial analysis and visualization of BIS data. The five GIS capabilities specified in the tender are:

1. Entity Geotagging and Hierarchical Mapping

All organizational units — BIS offices, branch offices, regional offices, recognized labs, manufacturers, AHCs, jewellers — will be geotagged on a map. This creates a visual representation of where every player in India's standards ecosystem is located, enabling geographic analysis of coverage, gaps, and clusters.

2. Field Operations GIS

BIS field staff (factory inspectors, market surveillance officers) will use mobile devices to capture inspections and surveys with automatic geotagging. Each inspection generates a location-stamped data point. Real-time data upload means the central system has live visibility into field operations across India.

3. Layer-Based Thematic Mapping

Multiple map layers will visualize compliance patterns — risk zones, coverage areas, performance status. A BIS manager could, for example, view a heat map of market surveillance failures by district, overlaid with the location of registered manufacturers in that area.

4. GIS-Driven Workflows

Automated alerts, task prioritization, and route optimization for field teams based on real-time location data. Field inspectors get automatically generated inspection routes optimized for geography. Market surveillance drives can be planned based on risk zone mapping.

5. Spatial Search and Location Intelligence

Searching for assets (labs, manufacturers, jewellers) within a defined area. Generating insights like clusters of non-compliant products in specific regions for targeted enforcement.

GIS Implementation Scope in MOP

GIS functionality is specified across nearly all 41 modules of the new platform — from Product Certification to CRS to Hallmarking to LIMS. It is fully integrated into the platform architecture rather than being a standalone feature. GIS enablement is in Batch 6 (final batch) as part of the AI/ML/NLP and GIS integration milestone.
