BIS Certification for Pumps: IS 9079 and Water Pump Quality Standards
BIS Certification for Pumps: IS 9079 and Water Pump Quality Standards
Water pumps — centrifugal, submersible, and mono-block pumps — used for domestic water supply, agriculture, and industrial applications have BIS certification requirements under applicable Indian Standards.
Key BIS Standards for Pumps
- IS 9079: Centrifugal mono-set pumps for clear, cold, clean water — the primary standard for domestic and agricultural water pumps
- IS 8034: Submersible pump sets for clear, cold, clean water
- IS 9137: Acceptance tests for centrifugal, mixed flow, and axial flow pumps
- IS 5120: Technical requirements for rotodynamic special purpose pumps
IS 9079: Centrifugal Mono-Block Pumps
The centrifugal mono-block pump (motor and pump in one unit) is India's most common domestic water pump. IS 9079 covers:
- Performance requirements: head, flow rate, efficiency at the best efficiency point (BEP)
- Hydraulic performance — the pump must deliver the rated head and flow rate within specified tolerances
- Motor thermal protection — the motor must have adequate thermal protection for continuous operation
- Mechanical requirements — vibration and noise limits during operation
- Dry running protection — protection against damage when operated without water
IS 8034: Submersible Pumps
Submersible pumps operate while fully immersed in water — in borewells, sumps, and tanks. Additional requirements beyond IS 9079:
- IP68 protection (immersion to specified depth for specified duration)
- Motor insulation resistance after water immersion
- Cable seal integrity at the motor entry point
- Thrust bearing capacity for vertical installation
Agricultural Pump Sets Under BIS
Pump sets used for agricultural irrigation (with motors above 0.37 kW) are subject to BIS Energy Efficiency labelling requirements under BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency) in addition to IS 9079 quality requirements. The star rating indicates energy efficiency — important for farmers given electricity costs.
For Procurement and Installation
Always specify BIS-certified pumps for installation. BIS-certified pumps have documented performance — you know the head and flow rate you are getting. Non-certified pumps often have inflated performance claims. House of Testing handles pump testing under IS 9079 and IS 8034.
