IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 for Gaming Devices: Consoles, Controllers, and Gaming Peripherals

Gaming consoles, gaming controllers, and gaming peripherals are covered under IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 (migrating from IS 13252 for IT devices or IS 616 for AV devices). India's gaming market is growing rapidly, making BIS compliance for gaming products increasingly important.

Products Covered

  • Gaming consoles (PlayStation, Xbox equivalents, and similar)
  • Gaming handheld devices
  • Gaming controllers (wired and wireless)
  • Gaming keyboards and mice (with specific gaming features)
  • Gaming headsets (wired and wireless)
  • Gaming monitors and displays
  • VR gaming headsets (new Category 65 — separate deadline)

Gaming Console Safety

Power Consumption and PS Classification

Modern gaming consoles consume 150-250W during intensive gaming. This puts them at or near the PS3 threshold (above 240VA). Ensure your console's PS classification is properly evaluated — consoles at maximum load can exceed the PS2/PS3 boundary.

Thermal Management

Consoles push CPU/GPU to near-maximum sustained load during gaming sessions lasting hours. Surface temperature limits at the top panel (which is sometimes touched during play) must be evaluated under sustained high-performance operation, not just idle temperatures.

Gaming Controller Safety

Rechargeable controllers: battery safety evaluation (typically 1,000-2,000 mAh lithium). USB-C or proprietary charging circuit evaluation. Vibration motor evaluation (haptic feedback) — the motor winding must be properly insulated.

Migration Timeline

VR gaming headsets: 1 May 2026 deadline. All other gaming products under IS 13252/IS 616: 1 November 2028 deadline. Gaming importers should plan migration now given the volume of products and series models to migrate. HOT handles IS 62368 gaming product testing.
