What IS 302 section applies to my electric water heater (geyser)?
Electric water heaters (geysers) — instant water heaters and storage geysers — fall under IS 302 Part 2 Section 21 (IEC 60335-2-21) — storage water heaters. Both Part 1 and Part 2 Sec 21 apply together.
Key Safety Tests for Electric Geysers
- Pressure vessel safety: The storage tank is a pressure vessel — must withstand specified hydraulic test pressure
- Thermostat reliability: Temperature cutout must prevent water exceeding safe limits (preventing scalding and steam generation)
- Pressure relief valve: Automatic pressure relief if thermostat fails and water overheats
- Dry-run protection: Element thermal cutout if operated without water
- Anode protection: Sacrificial anode for corrosion protection of tank
- Insulation wet test: Electrical insulation tested while tank is filled with water
Instant vs Storage Geysers
Instant (tankless) geysers fall under Section 35 (IEC 60335-2-35). They have additional requirements for flow-activated switching and temperature stability. House of Testing handles both storage and instant water heater testing under IS 302.
